When you hear the word “
millennial”, many people imagine a big child who is still living with and being supported by their parents. Millennials are supposedly ego-centric, overly idealistic, not willing to work hard, and addicted to their mobile devices. Now, all that is up for debate, but what is true is that this age group represents a very important
consumer base.
Millennials, those born between the years 1980 and 2000 (currently age 16-36) are expected to spend more than
$262 billion in 2017.
In case you’re wondering
where all that money is going, here’s a list of the top 20 most popular brands for millennials. Who knows – you might get some insight into the millennial mindset, or maybe just know which retail stocks are going to remain healthy into the next year.
Millennials’ favorite brands
- Apple: this fits perfectly with the prototypical millennial depiction of a mid-to-late 20-something browsing social media on their MacBook Pro while sipping a Starbucks latte.
- Target: despite their proclivity for expensive Apple products, as a group, millennials are pretty strapped for cash – hence why so many of them are still living at home. So it’s no wonder that discounted big box stores like Target and Walmart make this list.
- Nike
- Sony
- Coca-Cola
- Samsung
- Walmart
- Amazon: the core millennials, i.e. the ones who were growing up when the world rang in Y2K, were coming of age right at a time when online shopping was exploding in popularity, and Amazon has revolutionized that industry.
- Microsoft
- Victoria’s Secret
- Google
- Starbucks: okay, so no one is surprised that Starbucks made this list. I’m actually surprised it didn’t rank higher!
- Express
- Pepsi
- Ford: nice to know that this generation is preferring “made in the USA” for their automobiles.
- American Eagle
- Nintendo
- Adidas
- Disney: if you were a tween or teen in the year 2000, then your childhood was filled with some of the best Disney movies of all time (Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Pocahontas, Toy Story…), so this is no surprise.
- Old Navy
